Michael McGovern, originally from Walkerburn but now living in Peebles, has worked in Financial Services since starting with the Bank of Scotland in 1987, and is one of the founding Directors of Port Brae Wealth Management. He progressed to a qualified financial adviser in 1996 and a wealth manager from 2004, specialising in investment and inheritance tax planning. While working at the Bank of Scotland, Michael studied at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh and successfully completed his degree as a Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland (MCIBS). Michael firmly believes in building strong long-term relationships with his clients and conducting regular reviews to take account of their changing needs and circumstances.
Outside of work, golf, running and family life keeps him busy.
Mark started his financial services career with the Halifax Bank of Scotland and qualified as a financial adviser in 2005. During his 8 years at the HBOS, Mark enjoyed a successful career where he was considered one of the top financial advisers in Scotland. In 2009, Mark joined the St. James’s Place Partnership as a founding Director of Port Brae Wealth Management, where he is now based in our Berwick-upon-Tweed office. Over the years, Mark has accumulated an extensive portfolio of clients where he works closely to establish and achieve their financial objectives, while building trust and long-lasting relationships. Mark considers himself as an ‘allrounder’, where he specialises in holistic financial planning, including but not limited to: investment and retirement planning, inheritance tax planning, protection and specialist investment solutions.
Outside of the work environment, Mark is a proud father of two daughters. His interests include cycling, motorsports, snowboarding and golf.
Michael Cornish joined the Port Brae Wealth Management team in July 2017, having had previous experience in the financial services sector with the Royal Bank of Scotland, Bank of Scotland and the Skipton Building Society; a total of 11 years’ experience. Having already achieved his Diploma in ‘Regulated Financial Planning’, Michael now enjoys working towards becoming a Chartered Financial Planner and hopes to become chartered by 2019. Michael brings a wide range of experience to the team, with specialities in investment, wealth, inheritance and pension planning. Michael believes it is essential to stay in regular contact with his clients, to not only form lifelong relationships, but to also keep in touch with ever-changing; needs, goals and circumstances.
Outside work, Michael is a keen sportsman where he regularly trains for Ironman competitions and is an avid fan of football. He also enjoys socialising and spending time with friends and family.
Kirstin graduated from the from the University of Dundee in 2011, with an Undergraduate Degree in Law, and then completed a Masters Degree in Global Security at the University of Glasgow in 2012. Kirstin join the Port Brae Wealth Management team in August 2013, and became our Practice Manager in 2017. She has extensive experience in Paraplanning and the St James’s Place systems, and is a vital member of our team by providing support to both the Paraplanners and the Financial Advisers. Now managing 3 offices that stretch over the Borders Region, Kirstin ensures the smooth running of day to day Paraplanning and general office management.
Outside work, Kirstin enjoys travelling and skiing with friends and family.
Having previously worked in the financial services sector as a Mortgage Recovery Officer with the Alliance & Leicester Building Society, Hilary joined Port Brae Wealth Management on day one of the business in 2009. Hilary is based in our Peebles office, where she provides paraplanning and administrative assistance to the Financial Advisers, and has extensive knowledge of the St. James’s Place systems.
Outside work, Hilary is a proud mother of 3 children and enjoys music, where she plays for the local Silver Band. Hilary also enjoys walking the local countryside of Peebles with her dog and while on a career break in 2000 to start a family, Hilary studied and achieved a HNC in Early Education and Childcare.
Susan joined Port Brae in January 2017 after an extensive break from Financial Services to pursue other business interests and to have a family. Susan has a Banking background spanning 13 years and holds ACIOBS; MCIBS and CII qualifications, and is currently refreshing her CII qualifications and studying for CeMAP qualifications.
Susan’s Hobbies outside of work include pursuing other business interests; creative writing and her family.
Ron has been with Port Brae Wealth Management since November 2015, having had previous experience in Financial Services while working at the Bank of Scotland for over 11 years. Ron is based in our Berwick-upon-Tweed office where he acts as a Trainee Paraplanner to the financial advisers. He is an essential part of the team due to his knowledge of the St James’s Place systems and his broad range of Paraplanning knowledge. Ron is currently training to become a fully qualified Paraplanner and studying towards the Paraplanner exams.
Ron’s interests include socialising with friends and family, home cooking and going to the cinema.
Hayley’s career in financial services first began in 2009 when she started working for JRW Financial Services Limited as an Administrator. During her time with JRW Financial Services, she gained experience in Paraplanning and working with financial systems such as Financial Express Analytics and iRess. Hayley began working for Port Brae Wealth Management in September 2017 and is based in our Hawick office. Hayley is considered a vital member of the team due to her supportive nature and hard work ethic.
Outside work, Hayley enjoys socialising with friends and Family. Hayley is also a keen supporter of local music bands and festivals in and around the Scottish Borders area.
Rory graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2016 with a degree in Business Studies and Geography. While studying, Rory was employed by Santander as an On-call Customer Service Adviser, where he gained experience in a client facing role. Rory joined the Port Brae Wealth Management team in September 2017 as a Trainee Paraplanner and is based in our Hawick office. Rory is currently studying towards the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning and training to become a Financial Adviser.
Rory’s hobbies include rugby, where he plays scrum-half for a local team in Hawick, and football. He also enjoys socialising with friends and family.
Matthew Lean has recently joined Port Brae Wealth Management as a Trainee Paraplanner and is primarily based in the Peebles office. Having grown up in Innerleithen, Matthew attended Peebles High School prior to moving to Aberdeen to study Forensic and Analytical Science. After graduating with Honours in 2016 he worked in oil and gas as a Laboratory Analyst before making the switch to finance with aspirations of becoming a Financial Adviser.
In his spare time Matthew enjoys socialising with friends and taking part in a number of sports such as golf, mountain biking and skiing.
